Uplift Technologies DL930 Day-Light 10,000 Lux SAD Lamp
I had a look at Uplift Technologies website, and I was amazed at some of the pictures there are of how some people have used this SAD lamp. Reason being that the DL930 is quite large, looks something like a TV monitor from a futuristic sci-fi and is anything but discrete. Admittedly, this says nothing about how effective this sunrise clock is at alleviating the symptoms of winter blues (also known as SAD). But I’ll tell you my thoughts on the design first. The DL930 measures 4 x 21 x 16 inches in dimension and weighs in at a hefty 6 pounds. This Sunrise alarm clock is shaped much like a TV screen that is supported by two aluminum legs. The legs are not that sturdy and by the looks of them, a slight bump could topple the expensive sunrise lamp. I suppose Uplift realized this and added a built in tilt stand at the back of the lamp itself. That said, DL930 allows you to easily swivel the lamp to tilt in a 180 degree direction or adjust the height of the lamp when used with the leg stands. With the legs attached you can point the lamp towards any direction to suit your needs. Without the legs, the DL930 becomes easy to transport in a smallish carry bag though you won’t have the swivel option when you finally have to use it.
The DL930 SAD light alarm will give you up to 10,000 lux of brightness. As a SAD lamp the DL930 will work very well. Since the light therapy remedy requires that your eyes be able to detect the light, this maximum brightness coupled with the lamps size works well together. The quality of the light is also good with no flickering or UV emissions (100 percent UV filtering). Though Uplift Technologies claims that their unit has no glare, it is difficult to believe that given the size and power of the lamp. Recommended usage for SAD symptoms is between 20 and 30 minutes exposure each morning for a period of one to two weeks. Uplift has used a different approach in creating the mood altering light. As opposed to using a single light bulb to provide the 10,000lux of light, the opted to use instead 3 fluorescent light bulbs to produce the light. In my opinion this provides a layer of redundancy should one of the bulbs fail on you.
