Verilux VT05FWW1 Happylight 6000
I found that the Verilux happylight 6000 takes very little desk space compared to the company’s other models. This is readily noticeable. The Verilux 6000 works just like a sunrise simulator clock. As a sunrise simulator, it emits up to a maximum of 6000 lux of light in the same wavelength as natural light. A dose of light from sunrise alarm clocks or light therapy sunrise products such as the Happylight 6000, can help you cope with fatigue from jet lag, shift work or seasonal weather changes. The Verilux can improve your mood when you wake up in the morning by triggering the hormones in your body that elevate mood through light. You can also use it during the night if you are working on something and don’t wish to fall asleep too soon.
With such a compact design, I was shocked that the Verilux could reach 3000 lux let alone 6000 lux. It has dimensions of 5.6 x 3.9 x 12 inches. It also weighs only 2 pounds making it easy to carry around. As the Verilux is not meant to function as sunrise alarm clocks would, it lacks the LCD displays for clock settings and the like. If you are simply looking for a light for your desk at home then this works great. However, if you also want something to help you wake up in the morning then you are better off looking elsewhere. Going for about 70 dollars retail, you could add say 30 dollars and get a natural sunrise alarm clock that has the same if not more light intensity.
The bulbs used are apparently fluorescent and proprietary to Verilux. Finding them are not as easy as those from mainstream manufacturers like Philips for example. The bulb itself will last a long while (depending on usage of course) but it won’t last forever. The unit doesn’t use much electricity also. It takes in around 36 watts of energy. The light intensity of the lamp can also be adjusted. This is useful as the 6000 lux brightness can take some time to get used to. To remove the complexity in adjusting the brightness, there are 3 settings to choose from with the flick of a switch. If you suffer from SAD this is the ideal entry level solution to helping you cope with depressive moods but I would also recommend it to anyone who works late into the night.
